The Peril of Leaves and Acorns

A poem of thought as I ventured to the Jericho County Store to see whether the National Guard had extended their range to the Town Green.

The roar of two large engines on the Jericho Green

reaches our house

making us proud

that the town of Jericho, through its contractors

sees fit to protect us and the town green

from the danger of leaves and acorns on the ground.

The bluejays, chipmunks, and squirrels are rattled

the invertebrates (caterpillars: future butterflies and moths never to be)

and other wild creatures are but a minority in squawking at the 'clean up'

- the removal of natural habitat, including food from a small island of pervious ground.

Mowing the grass, lest some poor child be lost in the heightened prairie

scooping up the acorns - future trees unnecessary - a forgone conclusion

keeping us all safe from Nature's detritus.

With the shortest vision and outlook

the narrowest of views

one can blast away

today

what might have been

diversity of habitat and life

tomorrow.

god save Jericho Park

from all the

little creatures

said to

rule the world

Jericho Green

cut and vacuumed

- We are now safe!
