Insects Take the Spotlight - Single panel comics

A Series of Single-Panel Comics by Bernie Paquette, Illustrated by Nature

These single-panel comics feature real insects observed in the field paired with humorous captions. Each panel blends close observation and wit—inviting readers to slow down and notice the small creatures that quietly shape our ecosystems. When you slow down and look closely, the world grows infinitely larger.

Spring Equinox
Bumblebee in black and white
I am beginning to see the light of day!
Still black and white, but color is soon to come.
Cherry blossoms and college kids in shorts sitting on rooftops.
Observe nature awakening!
What Is the Spring Equinox?
On the March equinox, the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere receive roughly equal amounts of sunlight; neither hemisphere is tilted more toward or away from the Sun than the other. After the spring equinox, many places will experience more daylight than darkness in each 24-hour day. The amount of daylight each day will continue to increase until the summer solstice (in June), when the longest period of daylight occurs.

St Patrick's Day
4 leaf clover
Grasshopper
What, you were expecting Leprechauns? Ah, the little fellows are all down at the Irish pub. They left it up to me to guard their pot of gold. The
mischievous little devils painted me green -  I was a cricket dressed in black, now look at me.

March Palm Reading
Insight, encouragement, reflection
"Your future's in the groove of your corbicula."
She reached out and took hold of my corbicula and ran her index finger along the groove, tickling the surrounding stiff hairs before announcing, "You will soon awaken from this black and white dream to a world of many colors, sweet flowers, warm air, and then." And then she said no more.

*A bumblebee corbicula (or "pollen basket") is a specialized, concave, and hairless section on the hind tibia of female bumblebees used to collect and transport pollen.

OLYMPICS HIGH BAR
Dragonfly on a horizontal grass stalk
Olympic high bar (or horizontal bar): Continuous, high-flying swings, acrobatic release-and-regrasp moves, and in-bar elements, culminating in a dramatic dismount, demanding immense upper-body strength, precision, and fearlessness - without using your wings.
"What? I can't use my wings!"

Bronze Medal for HandStand
"You know what, honey, I don't care if you didn't win
the silver or gold in the Olympic Dragonfly Handstand competition.
Cause I am head over heels in love with you!"
Happy Valentine Sweetheart
You're the Best
in my
book!
                            - XOXO Bernie

SALT TALKS POSTPONED INDEFINITELY
Two bees in a car and a butterfly beside the car.
Slow down, will ya, there is no salt on the roads to melt the ICE.
Maybe we can use our caring hearts to melt ICE!

Pile-On
Photo of insects piled on top of each other
Pile-On to share warmth, not ICE-cold-hearted jump on a downed player.

My First cousin twice removed
Photo of a beetle
"BugyeyedBernie, you say. Hmm, are you sure you are my first cousin, twice removed? Your eyes are so small. What happened to your other four legs? "
                                                                                           - Eastern Eyed Click Beetle Alaus oculatus
