Comics by Bernie and Nature!

Laugh and Learn
De-bugging insects

Vermont single-panel comics. Captions by Bernie, images by nature. Sponsored by the Insect Alliance, Solidarity for All Life, and our highly valued Local Pollinators.

This comic strip introduced the term "Inverting" which means invertebrate watching as birding is to bird watching.

Inverting is being outside, observing, experiencing

the multitude, the diversity, the daily going ons of LIFE.

No bones about it, I am an 'inverter!

Let's recognize our bond with all living species in nature.

"All the world will be your enemy, Prince with a Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed." - Richard Adams, Watership Down
I'm doomed!

Unless, unless
it's a Slugfest,
then I will dance
and party
with the best of them!

Let's change our culture from an adversarial relationship with nature to a collaborative one.

 Fly Lord of the Rings

The title refers to the story's main antagonist, Youman, who, in an earlier age, created the One Ring to rule the other Rings of Power given to Insects, Birds, and all other Animals, in his campaign to conquer all of Earth.

Robber fly on the wall
Up against the wall and spread'em buster.
Keep your claws where I can see them
and your pulvilli attached to the wall.
Atomosia puella ID Confirmation Pending
Each of the fly's six legs has a typical insect structure of coxa, trochanter, femur, tibia, and tarsus, with the tarsus in most instances being subdivided into five tarsomeres. At the tip of the limb is a pair of claws, and between these are cushion-like structures known as pulvilli which provide adhesion.

Hey, watch where you are stepping you big clod.

Eastern Yellowjacket Vespula maculifrons

The eastern yellow jacket or eastern yellowjacket (Vespula maculifrons) is a wasp found in eastern North America. Although most of their nests are subterranean, they are often considered a pest due to their nesting in recreational areas and buildings. This yellow jacket is a social insect, living in colonies of hundreds to thousands of individuals. Along with their subfamily, Vespinae, this species demonstrates supportive parental care for offspring, separation of reproductive and sterile castes, and overlapping generations. They aggressively defend their hives from threats and are known to inflict painful stings. - Wikipedia

Facial Makeover
Body Powder Puffs that you can get your face into - big-time;
for when a true bug wants to look her finest.

The small milkweed bug is a widespread species. Identify it from other, similar-looking true bugs by its smallish size (only to about ½ inch long) and its special orange-and-black pattern: note the reddish-orange X on the back and a reddish-orange band running across the pronotum (the pronotum is the shield-like plate, like shoulders, between the head and wings). The reddish-orange pronotum band has two black spots on its front edge; on the hind edge are two half-circles of black, which, combined with the big black triangle-shaped mark in the middle of the back, looks like a black heart shape. Also, note the black head with a red spot on top.
